NOTE - This alert was drafted by an anonymous worker within the Pacifica power structure who asked their contact information be removed before it was forwarded far and wide. Many of us have been involved in the struggle to stop the corporate take-over of the Pacifica radio network. We must draw a line in the sand at this latest attack on free speech and the ongoing harassment against Democracy Now and other honest sources of non-corporate information. Below you will find emails, phone numbers, fax numbers and background info as well as details on a NY demonstration and how to plug into the national campaign to save Pacifica. Please take action and spread the word. In solidarity, Patrick Reinsborough Rainforest Action Network *************************************** Last Wednesday, the radical, nationwide radio show "Democracy Now!" was pulled from the air in New York. No warning or explanation was given. The Democracy Now! crew walked into the master control room at 8.57 am, as they do every morning, and were told to get out. People, I rarely ask for help but we need it now. I am taking a risk by sending a personal email. I have only written to the people I trust and whose email addresses I recognize from emails I've recently recieved. TAKE OUT MY NAME/RETURN ADDRESS if you forward this. There is a protest at 120 Wall Street (on Wall Street and the East River) from 4-6 pm this Thursday May 24th Even if you aren't personally familiar with Democracy Now!, if you care about free speech, or would like to see the one progressive radio outlet in this country survive, or if you think corporate control of the media sucks, it is important to voice your opinion now. -bring friends to the protest -TAKE OFF MY NAME AND EMAIL ADDRESS, write your own intro, cut and past the email below, and forward to all your friends, email lists, etc. -call the station and people at the numbers listed below. even if everyone does it just once, it makes a huge difference. P.S.: While Democracy Now! has been pulled off the air in New York, KPFK in Los Angeles is airing old, edited shows. The management in Washington D.C. is sending those shows daily. P.P.S. The corporate campaign tactics listed below resulted in the resignation of Michael Palmer, who was the treasurer of the Pacifica Board, last week. It appears that the Campaign is now concentrating on Ken Ford. ***** edited version. full version available at: www.pacificacampaign.org MAY 21-25, 2001 Pacifica stations KPFK in Los Angeles and WBAI in New York continue to keep Democracy Now! off the air. Remember every phone call, letter, or e-mail counts!! 1. Call the WBAI tally room at (212) 209-2950. Say NO to the censorship of Democracy Now! The protests will be in front of WBAI/New York and KPFK/Los Angeles. They will run from 4:00-6:00pm at WBAI and from 3:30-6:30pm at KPFK. 4. Call the Office of The Vice Chair of the Pacifica Board -- Ken Ford. He works for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in Washington, DC. Please call NAHB President Bruce Smith, Ken Ford's boss, and let him know that Ken Ford1s work at Pacifica is damaging the public reputation of the NAHB. Ask Mr. Bruce Smith to urge Ken Ford to resign from the Pacifica Radio Board. Be polite but be firm. Call NAHB executive office at 800-368-5242 x303 or x408.
