Proposition No. 11: Wages for Preshool Teachers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Author: Mrs. Tara Frost, Frostylady29@sbcglobal.net Submitted on: 14 Oct 2003 To be discussed till: July 1, 2004 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A proposition that will set the law for Preschool/Daycare teachers with a minimum starting pay of $10.00 per hr. and topping out at $15.00. Preschool teachers only start out $1.50 above the minimum wage. The minimum wage has risen, tuition has climbed to atleast $650 per child full time, and so has the cost of living. Yet the pay for these hard working teachers has remained the same. These teachers are all ready required to have a complete 12 ECE Units, (Early Childhood Eduation) in order to work. There is no tuition rembursement and 9 out of 10 schools do not have any health benefits, 401K, retirement,or sick pay. This is an occupation that is in great need of teachers on a regular basis and does not fulfill the consistency that a young child needs and deserves due to the poor treatment of teachers. This is a business that is not included in a district but is completely taken advantage of by the private business owners themselves. For example, tuition was raised 2 times in the last 2 years yet the teachers never got a raise. In our society today both parents usually have to work and require some sort of preschool or daycare. It is obviously an important need.I am absolutely sure that if this occupation atleast paid better wages, that teachers would stay.
