Proposition No. 3: giving parents more power in education/school policies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Author: gabriela aguirre, gabia@escape.ca Submitted on: 23 Oct 2000 To be discussed till: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Parents do not have any participation in school policies, especially at municipal levels. Except for being able to join a Parent Advisory Council that has no real power except for fundraising. The hiring of teachers, discpline manuals (that do not exist) and all decision making is in the hands of the bureocrats that rule with no accountability for their decisions. A parent representative should be appointed to all levels of school government, Board of Trustees, Superintendency and schools to control hiring of personnel, children's rights etc. This should be a volunteer position on a rotating basis. It is incredible how tax-payers who are in essence paying the salaries of these authorities do not have any power. Only when the system fails, is that we realize we are paralysed.
